The Role:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and knowledgeable Gardener to join the team at Lulworth Castle House, the private residence of the Estate owners, set within the historic Lulworth Estate.

This role is suited to a skilled, conscientious individual with a strong horticultural background, excellent attention to detail, and a high level of professionalism. The successful candidate will have at least 2 years’ professional gardening experience, good all-round plant knowledge, and a strong work ethic. Experience working to high standards in private gardens or estates is desirable. The ability to service and maintain garden machinery would be an advantage.

As the gardens form part of a private household, discretion, confidentiality, and respectful conduct are essential at all times.

Skills and Experience Required

Essential:
• Minimum of 2 years’ professional experience working in gardens (private estates, historic gardens, or high-quality domestic gardens preferred)
• Good all-round plant knowledge and practical horticultural skills
• Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
• Strong work ethic with attention to detail and pride in high standards
• Professional, discreet, and trustworthy manner
• Physically fit and able to undertake manual outdoor work in all weather conditions

Desirable:
• Ability to service and maintain garden machinery (e.g. mowers, strimmers, hedge cutters)
• Relevant horticultural qualifications (e.g. RHS or equivalent)
• PA1/PA6 spraying certificate, chainsaw ticket, UTV/ATV ticket
• Previous experience working within a private household or estate environment

Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out the day-to-day maintenance and development of the private house gardens to a high standard.
  • Undertake all aspects of horticultural work, including:- Planting, pruning, deadheading, and seasonal maintenance. Lawn care, including mowing, tending to borders, beds, shrubs, hedges, and ornamental planting. Soil preparation, mulching, feeding, and pest/disease monitoring.
  • Support the presentation of the gardens throughout the year, including preparation for seasonal changes and special occasions.
  • Operate garden machinery and tools safely and efficiently.
  • Service and maintain garden machinery where capable, or report issues as required.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Estate gardening and maintenance teams.
  • Follow all health and safety procedures and estate policies.
  • Maintain a tidy, organised working environment at all times.
  • Respect the privacy of the household, ensuring strict confidentiality and professional behaviour.
